Become a Party Coordinator (Long Island)

Birthday Wishes Party Coordinators are the heart of our program and are vital to our mission to bring the joy of a birthday party to children experiencing homelessness. Volunteer Party Coordinators (PCs) are members of the community who make a one-year commitment to run monthly birthday parties for children at an assigned homeless shelter.

Who Can Be a Party Coordinator?

Anyone over 18 years old. If a teen wishes to be involved a parent or guardian must be the primary contact and assume the role of a Party Coordinator. Volunteers should have a strong interest in working with families experiencing homelessness. Experience working with children is a plus. All Party Coordinators must have access to a car.

What do Party Coordinators do?

PCs act as the liaison between their assigned shelter and Birthday Wishes’ staff. Their primary function is to coordinate and host a birthday party each month at their shelter. They will oversee all activities and lead party volunteers in organizing age appropriate activities and games for shelter residents during their monthly parties. Finally, Party Coordinators will report their monthly party data to Birthday Wishes staff.

What is the time commitment to be a Party Coordinator?

PCs are asked to make a minimum commitment of one year, coordinating and hosting one party per month. Parties are typically weekday evenings between 6:00-7:30 p.m. Days and time vary by location, but are set on a same-day-every-month schedule. An additional 2-3 hours per month is required for coordinating and reporting. Depending on the shelter assignment most PC’s will need to pick up supplies each month at our Hicksville, NY office.

What training does a Party Coordinator receive?

Party Coordinators participate in a group and individual training session. Prior to running their own parties, PC’s train at other shelters with Birthday Wishes staff. Party Coordinators receive ongoing support and training from Birthday Wishes staff.
